Each year we enjoy taking a family vacation during the Christmas break. This past year we offered to take the boys on a cruise, but surprisingly they were not interested. As fate would have it, the one place they wanted to visit was Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley in Memphis, Tennessee. As you can imagine, my mother was thrilled to hear this. So we started making plans to take a family road trip (a pilgrimage for my mother) to Graceland.
I’m not going to lie that I was dreading going to Memphis with the entire family in cold weather when we could have been enjoying the sun of a Caribbean Cruise. However, I have to admit we had a great time together exploring Graceland and the Elvis Presley Museum. The visit to Graceland provided me with insights into the King of Rock-N-Roll’s life I never knew. Obviously, Elvis is an American icon whose music still inspires millions today. Yet, it was his personal logo that fascinated me the most…
For some reason, I had never seen or heard of Elvis’ logo before. TCB⚡️stands for “Taking Care Of Business In A Flash.” This statement was Elvis’ motto. It was so important to him that he personally designed the logo and placed it on everything from his airplane and vehicles to his jewelry and personal effects. The logo is even on his tombstone…
I was so inspired by his motto and logo I bought the t-shirt!
Elvis Presley’s life was unfortunately cut short at the age of 42. However, when you consider the mark he made on music history in such a short time, it highlights the importance of his motto – Taking Care Of Business In A Flash. This logo and statement is an important reminder for all of us that life is short and it is incumbent upon us to make the most of each day and year of our lives.
Elvis’ logo had me thinking all the way home from Memphis about the need to live with urgency. Too many people live in the fantasy of “Someday.” It is easy to subconsciously think that…
- Someday I will organize my life
- Someday I will start achieving my goals
- Someday I will get my finances in order
- Someday I will lose weight and get in shape, etc.
The problem with the “Someday” mentality is that someday is an indefinite period of time. When you look back over your life you realize how quickly 10 years lapse. Life is a like a flash and wasting too many years not pursuing your dreams and making the most of your opportunities will lead to regret in the end. The only way to prevent this is to get up and begin to Take Care Of Business In A Flash if you want to see your dreams become reality.
The fallacy of “Someday” can be even more luring to Christians. The promises of God’s Word are so incredible and powerful that they can become a crutch. This may seem to be a strange statement, but in a weird way it’s true. Christians can read the promises of God and be lulled into assuming that God is going to do all of these wonderful things in our lives “someday” in the future. As we sit back waiting on God years of our lives are spent never obtaining the fullness of His promises. The fact is God’s promises are not without our responsibility. The scripture is clear – “faith without works is dead.” (James 2:17). It’s not that one can do enough good things to earn God’s promises, however, we must be a doer of what we hear for the promises to be realized. In other words – take God at His word by taking care of business in a flash.
I have been thinking about one scripture for some time as it relates to this concept. Ephesians 3:20 is a verse we all love to quote. It states – “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” This scripture is exhilarating to Christians because it states that God will do exceedingly and abundantly above our expectations. This is certainly true and it highlights God’s scale of increase. God’s increase moves up from exceedingly to abundantly exceeding to far beyond our ability to ask. Amazing! Christians read this and think that God is going to exceed our dreams and desires someday. Yet, this does not absolve us from personal responsibility. The fact is dreams and ideas don’t work; people do. You and I have a role to play in this spiritual reality.
There are two important book ends in this verse. It starts with the word “Now” and ends with the phrase “according to the power that works in us.” God’s power to do exceedingly and abundantly is not reserved for someday, He desires to do it NOW. This reality in our lives is according to the power that is working in us. As we are faithful to the work of God’s purpose in our lives, we can expect His power to fulfill that purpose to abundantly exceed our expectations. Knowing this truth will empower us to take advantage of each season of life while enjoying the abundance of His blessings all along the way. This truth will lead to a rich and rewarding life void of the regrets of procrastination.
In the final analysis, Taking Care Of Business In A Flash is a practical reminder of the importance of living each day to its fullest. As we do, we can expect God to do His part that will far exceed our own abilities. This was a great reminder from a trip to Graceland, and the opportunity to meet a “Little Elvis” was an added bonus!
